Good for knee injuries too!I bought this scooter because I have a severely torn medial meniscus and can't walk long distances without severe pain in my knee when I straighten my leg because its a bone-on-bone situation. I'm awaiting surgery, but wanted an alternative to crutches since my employer has huge parking lots, hallways and distances beteeen buildings. This scooter is my perfect alternative. It is very sturdy. Although the instructions state that the kneepad is not intended for sitting on, it is strong enough for you to. I took it for a test ride at work and sat on it the whole time with no issues. The manufacturer should manufacture a seat if this is an issue, which I don't think it is. I think its more of a liability thing in case someone sues for falling off it or whatever. The device is rated for 400lbs., so if you are under that you probably have no issues...even sitting on it like i do. If you need to carry stuff and use this, I'd recommend a backpack or buying a basket that goes on the front.5Ideal for my needsI had surgery on my foot that requires me to be non-weight bearing for 8 weeks. My doctor ordered me to have a knee walker for after surgery. I shopped and read reviews before purchasing this before my surgery. This is perfect for my needs. I needed a knee walker that would support more weight, is easy to transport, stable, and somewhat compact. This marks all the boxes. It arrived the day of my surgery and my brother put it together in no time for me the day after it arrived. I don't know how I would manage without this. I can move around my house with relative ease and the ability to fold it down in three easy steps for when I need to go to appointments has been a life saver. The pouch is handy and the cushion is very comfortable. My only complaints are that if the wheels get wet, they leave black marks on my floor and there is no way to lock the brakes so it won't roll away from me when I am getting off the knee walker. The zipper pouch is handy but I would have preferred a basket. Neither of those reasons is enough for me to give this less than five stars. This is a great knee walker and I am so happy that this is the one I decided to purchase.5absolutely wonderful! The scooter came on time and was mostly assembled. Just little adjustments. I had achilles heel surgery and this device saved me from crutches! SO much more comfortable! It is easy to maneuver and aids in bathing, dressing, restroom mobility and getting out of a bed or chair easily ,along with being comfortable when cooking, cleaning, or going out away from the house. It is easy to fold and put in the car ( a little heavy for the one legged person to get put in the car) but easy for the helper. You still need crutches for stairs but that is all. Who ever invented this was a genius! Company was easy to work with. It cost me $120/month to rent this thing and I needed it for 6 months. Buying it was a smart move. Just sent my perscription and bill to insurance and they covered it. Came out cheaper to buy it and I have it if ever needed again. One size fits all so I can share it too. I feel like I am 10 again on my scooter and how enjoyable is that? Wheeeeee!5Stable and well builtMy wife has found this to be very stable, and sturdy. The only thing that I would change is to have the brakes be able to lock. Sometimes she needs to sit down, and the wheels can't be locked. The brakes help well with hills and assisting with getting up, but if they could lock that would make it a much more useful assist for her.5Well built and great in tight spotsLove this scooter. Almost together in the box. We had it rolling in no time. Steering is tight and it rolls FAST! I was told to slow down in the rehab hallways several times. You feel safe on it not tippy at all I ordered one of the "other" ones with air filled tires thinking it would be better on rough floors at work. Not! This is twice the scooter.5Scooter and toilet railsSo let's say you get your great toe on your left or right foot operated on - your ass is going to be laid up for a few weeks - you will need crutches for a couple of things but this scooter will save you! To and from the restroom, wheels lock to get off or on the scooter - plus you will be high on codene. Also buy safety rails for the toilet do you don't blow your knee out! On Amazon too - and my insurance will reimburse me for durable medical equipment.5For now, the next best thing to a healed foot. Kills the competition at a great price!I had an arch reconstructed with bone fusion and a lot of titanium. The day after surgery, prior to release, the P.T. Therapist came in with my options for getting around for 6 to 8 weeks in a non- walking cast. The crutches were a no brainier; it was clumsiness that led to a middle aged basketball injury. The walker required me to hold up the heavy cast. I'm too old ( just turned 64 last week) to go from a paunch to a six pack that way. The walker they gave me to try was heavenly. I'm great a parallel parking and spent my youth on bicycles and motorcycles so it handled like the former with training wheels. The one my wife could find available to rent was another story. I might have been satisfied with the Roscoe were it new and tight with tread on the tires. Unlike the Essential, which has a fixed front axle and tie rods for turning, the Roscoe front axle turns. Both scooters have a good, important feature in common. The rear axle is narrow so the back wheel does not habitually hit your foot. But this represents a dilemma I discovered the first night. When you cut the front wheels hard on the Roscoe, your rear support remains a narrow fixed axle but you front support becomes an angled set of support points making you prone to tip over, which I can attest, happens.I got back up painfully, made my way on to the bathroom, which was my original mistake, and logged on to Amazon to find their top-rated scooter ( the Essential). I called the physical therapy after ordering and was not surprised that I had been demonstrated the Essential by them. Two day delivery is a blessing. Thank you, Amazon. As for the getting up to pee, be smarter than I was. If you're a guy, and need a scooter, you need a hospital type bottle to avoid the hassle, even if your scooter is a mini-Ferrari.For the duration I'll need the scooter, buying at $400 is still cheaper. If you need to rent, make sure you get the Essential. If you can't rent one, I'd strongly recommend buying from Amazon and reselling.I teach math in my pre retirement years so I'll need to be on my feet and may keep this to mid year as the doctor said it could be six months to be back to normal. I'll probably add the basket before school starts to carry stuff. I have some questions about construction and will post back a long term report as I've now had only 3days on each. The Essential is demonstrably a more comfortable and safer scooter, right down to two locking wheels vs one on the Roscoe.I carefully examined the construction on the Essential as I assembled it. These are my observations and longer term questions. The Essential frame is two sided bent tubing, symmetrical with the four fixed support points. The Roscoe was one central tube section with more welds than bends. Neither had added gussets to support the welds. The steering height adjustment on the Roscoe was worn,so a little looseness translated at the top to a wobble which I mostly fixed with tape around the inner of the two joining tubes. The adjustment on the a roscoe is higher. We'll see if that translates to more long term stability. The fixed mount for the lower turning section is well below the cushion level, welded to the tip to fold assembly. But, again, an ungusseted weld with a long lever arm (although the very generous application of welding solder is molded as if by an artist.) This was no rooky job but design is design and physics dictates there will be a lot of strain on the joint. Finally, why two tie rods on one wheel and one on the other? Will it make a difference?I'll let you know but for now, the Essential is all one could ask for other than not to need any scooter at all.Follow upI used the Free Spirit for a bit over six weeks and it was great. Breaks work well on wet ramps. Frame stayed nice and tight. I added the sheepskin seat cover and basket for comfort and convenience. Now just have to figure out how to sell it.55"3 and works like a charmThere are lots of great reviews so I only want to add one point. Although advertised for those 5"4 to 6"6 - it will work for those who are shorter DEPENDING on the length of your lower leg. I have a longer lower leg than is average for my height (according to doc so don't hold me to that). I have no problem with this walker. Full disclosure - I did rent this exact model before purchasing so I knew it would fit me. I measure 15 inches from the bend at the back of the knee to the bottom of my foot (16 inches with sneakers) It's a very stable unit.5If you want the best, buy thisGave this a 5 star rating, because it is sturdy, stable and made to last, even though my wife only used it one day before the knees she rode on it acted up and developed an painful effusion. DOn't blame the walker/scooter as she overdid because of her previous immobility and previous injury to this knee! Even so, we are keeping it, both of us have 70+ year old bodies and who knows who will use it next?5Highly recommend, very durable and great customer service.I never write reviews but felt compelled to share that Essential Medical Supply offers excellent customer service. Not only did this scooter serve the purpose of transporting me around for a total of 16 weeks but when I lost one of the adjustment knobs (due to my error of not tightening it completely after adjusting the height), the customer service department was prompt in getting back to me about replacing the part. Excellent company. This scooter is extremely durable and well built and at $85 a week rental which insurance does not cover, this price can not be beat. I would highly recommend.5
