Customer Reviews

Not the quality it appears to beSadly it is not the quality it appears to be. I went through the entire calibration right out of the box and it is consistently off by 5 to 6 pounds. This is checked against a digital scale I have at home, as well as, a balance beam scale at the doctors office. Digital scale and and Doctor's beam scale match up identical, but this scale is off. It looks tough and durable, but when you stand on it, it feels rather flimsy. The way the dial reads just seems like it is cheaply made. I really wanted a good analog scale. I shopped really hard and read a lot of reviews. Very disappointing. 2Does not weigh even close to acurate!Standing on the scale, the weight fluctuates over a 40 pound range. If you don't like your true weight, just wiggle around on the scale; the numbers will go up or down depending which foot you lean on. Horrible scale. Inaccuracy is an understatement. 1Don't buy, look for an alternativeI previously owned an older Salter Professional Analog Mechanical Dial Bathroom Scale that I enjoyed very much. I wanted to get a second one for my home and purchased this one. Unfortunately I should have paid closer attention to the reviews. This model has either a design flaw or the factory producing it is not doing proper QA testing. My scale was inaccurate, the dial would stick, and the face plate seems to be crooked or misaligned. I decided to give it time to break-in to see if, with use, the springs would loosen up. Unfortunately that never happened and out of frustration and disappointment I ended up throwing this out into the trash. I purchased an electronic bathroom scale with better reviews and that has been a better investment. I would caution against purchasing this product. 1This thing has been off since day one and now ...This thing has been off since day one and now we face two new, possibly related, problems. The scale started stopping at 220 for me and I'm closer to 265. I lightly 'bounced' on it for a little bit to loosen up the springs and it must have, b/c the needle was about 5 pounds in the negative from 0. When I attempted to roll the dial to adjust this it wouldn't roll both ways...only farther in the negative. Now the whole thing is 'locked up' b/c out of frustration I rolled that dial all the way to the right and it won't budge trying to roll it to the left. From day 1 this felt very cheap but my wife convinced me that was how precision scales felt. Now she hates this thing more than I do and we can't return it. It's only been 2 months so I'll be looking into the warranty. 1But it works and is built pretty well. Just a note for all you folks ...This thing is way bigger than I had expected. But it works and is built pretty well. Just a note for all you folks out there that complain about it not being accurate. These scales work the old fashioned way, with springs and coils. They need time to break in. Ours took about two weeks of regular use to be consistent. Just give it some time.... 4Approximate is close enoughI wasn't really hoping I would like this scale more than I do especially considering the price. I have it set on a solid, level surface and I have to calibrate it every time I use it. I can step on it 5 times and get 5 different measurements that vary by 5 pounds. I just take an average after 3 measurements. 3Perfect bathroom scale but needs some finesseThis is an old fashioned scale with a giant dial and generous standing space. Perfect for the bathroom and, at least for me, much more pleasing to use than a digital scale.Note that this is a mechanical device and it therefore requires a little finesse to get the most out of it. Here's what I've noticed:GROUND SURFACEAny scale should be placed on a level and hard surface. If you put it on something with give, like a carpet, the surface will push back and show an increased weight. That goes for all scales, not just this one.ZEROING THE SCALEThis is where a lot of people go wrong and then complain of accuracy issues. Like most scales, there is a knob to adjust where the "zero" is by displacing the needle slightly to the left or right. Since the needle and indicator dial are mechanical, there is a bit of friction in the system. If you place a foot on the scale and take it off quickly, you wil see the needle swing down to zero, and inertia carries it through the zero point slightly into the negative region, WHERE IT THEN STOPS.It stops there because of friction. If you give the scale a few light taps with your toe, you will see the needle jiggle loose and return to a point closer to zero. A few more taps and you will see the needle quivers with each tap but always returns to that starting point. That's where you want to adjust the knob so the zero points to that starting spot. I usually give the scale two quick taps before stepping on in order to (1) make sure it's still at zero, and (2) most importantly, make sure I am getting a consistent weight reading each time.WHERE TO STANDI've noticed that there is a way to "maximize" the weight shown on the scale. You have to stand up straight and lean very slightly forward. Since the laws of physics would seem to indicate that I can't exert more force than my weight, I interpret the maximum weight as the true weight. If you prefer to deceive yourself, you can slouch to the rear a little and lose about a pound.Overall a great scale. Only four stars because for the price I would have liked a glass dial cover instead of plastic. 4Terrible ScaleThis scale sucks...period! I purchased it because of the reviews I read, and man was I mislead. I've compared it to several other scales (both digital and analog) in professional office settings, and it is off by more than 25 pounds. My return window has closed with Amazon, so I'll be tossing this in the trash and getting a (hopefully) better one. Do yourself a favor. Stay away from this scale. 1Disappointed! The dial face is offsetDisappointed! The dial face is offset. I can deal with that, but it appears as if it's a stick-on and is bowed up on one side. I hate poor quality and having to return things. Also, had I realized that it was as big as it was, I wouldn't have gotten this one. I'm sure the specs were posted, but I went on the picture mostly and from what I'd seen other people owning. 1It worksIt's work fine. The people complaining don't understand how to calibrate a manual scale. Put two dumb bells where your feet would go and adjust the wheel until the weight is correct. Note that sometimes the scale starts in an off position and will give you a bad result. just weight yourself a few times until you see a consistent result. It's a lot better than most digital scales. 5
