Not as much support as my old ankle braceThis ankle support looks very much like my old Hely and Weber except for the addition of the closure wrap around the top of the brace. (I thought this was a nice addition). I have a couple of problems with the Shock Doctor product. First, the figure 8 straps are made of a thinner nylon which allows for quite a bit a stretching. This decreases the amount of support that is created. Also, the closure wrap around the top of the brace is a bit short and almost won't reach around my calf. (Some women have bigger calves then men). If you have a smaller calf and don't need too much support, this is a good value. If you need more support, check out the Hely and Weber.P.S. I use this ankle support because I broke my calacneus 4 years ago and now have arthritis in the subtalar joint. I use this product to decrease the amount of pain when I walk.I don't use it to prevent sports injuries.Update: I ended up returning this brace. I just did not offer enough support. Amazon was very easy to deal with and the return went smoothly. 3Very sturdy brace.I actually bought this to sleep in. I had my ankle and upper foot reconstructed a few years ago and sometimes the covers pushing on my foot at night bothers me. This holds my foot in the correct position so that it can relax and heal at night. I don t think this would be great for sports. When you get it laced up and strapped on, it allows very little motion. 5Tried many braces - this one works.I bought several different ankle braces online and at retail stores over the last few months in my quest to find a brace that was as good as taping my ankle up, which, if you are doing it yourself, is a slow tedious task, but offers you superior roll-over protection if applied correctly.I returned every brace except this one. All the others I tried offered almost no roll over resistance ... and I found that true no matter how hard I cranked on the laces. My foot would go numb ... but I could still roll it!The ultra wrap saved me 25 minutes of taping a day. It is a highly stable, comfortable support that has key features none of the others do. The double, velcro fastened, over-wraps are what provide the stability to the lace up structure below. I can wear it for three sets of tennis with no problem and the over-wraps are adjustable mid-game if need be ...without the need to remove your shoe.Is it as good as taping your ankle? No. ... but it's pretty darn close ...and it goes on in two minutes or less.Bottom line: It's a cost effective (tape is expensive!) alternative to taping that is quick and easy ...and probably 85-95% as stable as tape.Hope this review helps those who are in the same boat I was a few months ago. 5Since nobody else will write a review about the sizing ...Since nobody else will write a review about the sizing. Ill post a picture. Measure around your ankle one inch about the joint and the sizes will fit accordingly. I tore 3 ligaments and this brace helps my pain go down by restricting the motions that hurt. Very light yet heavy duty! 5Serious Support!I bought it for my husband who broke his ankle, had a plate inserted, and a screw was inserted between the two bones to reattach the tendon. He is finally out of the big boot after 10 weeks, and has moved on to a compression sock and this ankle support during the day. His PT said that this is the best that she has ever seen. We had purchased several ankle wraps locally, and on Amazon, and none were as sturdy as this one. The wrap starts out with lacing up the front (like a normal shoe), then each strap wraps across the front, then below the heal and up. There is a third strap from back to front to hold everything steady. We had purchased a strap which started out with laces, but there were merely laces gripped together and latched on to velcro on the other side. My husband's foot was so swollen that the laces couldn't reach the velcro. So this version with the lacing up front is more accomodating to changes in size of ankle due to swelling. It took a few times for him to get used to putting it on, but it is so worth it. He has started playing golf, and the wrap is essential for uneven surfaces. 5I wish I could return this......This brace is very uncomfortable and problematic to put on. The laces need to be pulled out almost completely to make the brace open enough to be able to get my foot in, which means it needs to be replaced completely every time. I have a hard time getting the laces tight enough along the bend of the ankle to get the needed support but having to be looser at the tied and calf to not have the feeling cut off or have the edges of the brace cutting in to my skin. Most importantly, when reading the description of this brace, I rewsbiy as being a strong support level with reinforcements up the side to stabilize the ankle. This has nothing other than a few Velcro strips to wrap around and support the joint. If I still had any of the packaging I would be returning this. Not the best brace If you need really strong support. 1Worked for Me for Peroneal Tendonitis and Posterior Tibular Tendon DisfunctionAfter suffering from ankle pain, I finally went to an orthopedic doctor. His diagnosis, Peroneal Tendonitis, coupled with Posterior Tibular Tendon Disfunction. Nothing bone related, all soft tissue and the foot/ankle was starting to roll outward. So he sent me to the brace shop next door. They fitted me with a $30 brace and charged me $600 for the courtesy. Since I knew it wasn't bone, and the brace did help, I figured, as an engineer, I can do this too. So I ordered about 8 different brace types from Amazon - total cost about $250, all tax deductible. Then started a couple of month test and evaluation phase. Of the 8, two made the cut and made a significant difference. The Shock Doctor and the Swedo X-8.The key was the figure 8 wrap of the ankle, but even more so was making sure the last wrap was to the inside and pulled up the arch. All of the other brace types just did not prevent those sharp stabbing pains in the tendons. The Shock doctor is a bit more elastic and comfortable, and easier to put on than the Swedo, but both do the job. In this day of $1,000's of dollars of medical deductibles, a little research on your own can pay dividends. 5Excellent for what I had going onThis brace worked perfectly for me. I had a strained lateral ligament and a bad sprained ankles. Felt like I had broken my foot and just having this brace on helped relieve pain from normal moves. The doctors suggested it when I went to get X-rays but I couldn t afford it from the local sports retailer (Dicks sporting goods) but when I found it here, I was very pleased with the pricing. The only problem I had was the brace created a Bind point on the outside bottom of my foot when I had my gym shoes on. Any other shoes were fine. It hurt bad enough that I couldn t wear those shoes until my foot was stable enough to not need the brace any more 5Excellent Supports (& Comparison to McDavid 195)I've been happy with McDavid supports for a few years, but as one of them finally fell apart, I decided to try the Shock Doctor version. The SD is superior for a few reasons:- Less bulky. SD has a lighter feeling to it.- Shorter toe-to-heel-wise. This is noticeable in the photos. SD is on the right foot and McD on the left. SD is a solid inch shorter. I have semi-bone spurs (tarsal boss?) on the top of my feet and the SD fits so much better. McD covers and annoys it. SD is short enough not to hit it.- Better lacing. Instead of metal eyelets like on the McD, the SD uses fabric loops. These also make it less bulky and irritating. They might be slightly less study than the McD version because of the thinness (I've only worn the new SD 5-10 times) but even if I have to replace them a bit more frequently, I think they are worth it. 5Excellent support, lacing allows for customizationThe lacing system is awesome - it allows for a custom fit (loose or tight) between each micro area between the eyelets. The eyelets are similar to the Nike Speed lace system... so, i assumed that pulling the laces from the top would tighten the entire brace. Not at all. Pull from the top, only the top area tightens. Not sure if this is due to the laces grabbing or the eyelets (or both). Regardless, I keep mine semi-loose in the foot area, very snug in the ankle, semi-loose near the calf. Love this since it gives me the support I need without cutting off the circulation in my foot or calf. This ability to customize is a real plus for me but may not be for others that need convenience and expedience.I wear size 9.5 Mens and the medium fits perfectly (worn w/ sock underneath)I ordered this, ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis and McDavid 195. I'm returning the McDavid. Still waiting for the ASO.I've pasted my review of the McDavid below.===I encountered the same problems as others have cited... the forefoot is VERY tight due to the elastic being short (though stretchy). Seems to be designed to provide a very snug fit there since the rest of brace fits accurately. The narrow opening (due to the short elastic) did restrict my ability to slip my foot into the brace, especially since I have a severe sprain and have limited mobility. I am returning this brace. 5
